Holywell and Ragnall from Coombe Hill

This image was painted for the 2003 calendar of local views. It was painted over three late autumn mornings as the sun slowly warmed the mist out of the valley.

Rose and Clematis

This cascade of Roses and clematis making a dramatic diagonal composition was painted in my cottage garden at Little Acre in Wotton. My challenge in painting flowers with oils is to make the paint as fresh and vigorous as the flowers themselves.

Turkish Delight and Crystallised Fruits

In this composition every surface is a vehicle for dramatic effects of light and colour, from the glistening cherries to the reflective brass bowls and shimmering beaded silk of the saris on which they are arranged. Much care was taken in selecting, arranging and lighting the different elements to produce a feast of colour and texture.
