The Boost group started soon after the Wotton Arts Project was set up. It followed a ‘taster’ day where families were asked what sort of events they would like for their children. The parents of children with additional needs told us that as well as their children being included in the events at the centre, they would also appreciate some events that were aimed at their children specifically. From there, a pattern developed where we would organise a Boost session per programme, usually on a Sunday afternoon for two hours. These sessions have included drama, craft, dance, music, circus skills, animation, puppetry, photography and cooking. The numbers of children attending have varied, but we have a ‘core’ group of children who attend regularly, some of whom come from as far as Gloucester. We are currently trying to increase the numbers by advertising the group more widely. We are fortunate in having a great band of volunteers and are often supported by young people from KLB school.
The children seem to really enjoy the sessions – watching them parade around in the crowns that they made for a drama about Kings and Queens was a definite highlight, as was a show performed with puppets that they made from newspaper! The atmosphere is relaxed, with parents and carers taking time to have a cup of tea and cake with other parents or joining in the activities if they choose. We are busy planning events for 2013, having recently had a very welcome ‘boost’ to our finances from the arts centre fundraising event ‘Words, Wit and Wine, too’.
