INSTANT WIT : 8pm

Instant Wit, the best in improvised comedy. Fresh and inventive, each show throws up new nuggets of hilarity crafted by a company of the highest calibre. It’s a pick-me-up tonic with unexpected twists and a dash of sauce.

There’ll be sketches, songs and general silliness – and all of it based around audience suggestions. And if you’re too shy to shout anything out? Well don’t worry, you’ll have the chance to write things down in the interval. We’re the ones who’ll look daft, not you!

So now’s the time to indulge yourself if you’ve always had a secret yearning to see something really bizarre on stage. How about an English folk song about a tortoise going on holiday? A sketch where Sainsbury’s opens a branch on the moon? Well why not? Your wish is our command. Good suggestions get flying packets of custard, the best a bottle of wine.

Many people have seen improvised comedy on the t.v. – but remember, this is not recorded and edited, but totally live, making it trickier for the actors but more exciting for the audience. So, if you like your comedy fast-paced and with a slightly unusual edge, this is definitely for you.

We’re proud to use some of the best in local talent, with our performers regularly appearing at the Tobacco Factory, Theatre Royal Bath and the Bristol Old Vic.

Instant Wit – a bunch of very Unusual Suspects who are forever on the run from the Comedy Police.

"These are conspicuously skilful performers - everyone is exhilarated on stage and off!" The Guardian

“Instant Wit produce a show of surreal, mad-cap improvised hilarity that will leave you aching with laughter, chuckling with the stupidity of it all and, no doubt, wanting to go again.”

ALAN BURKE : 8pm

Alan Burke is widely regarded as one of the finest ballad singers of his genera-tion and possesses an almost inexhaustible repertoire of traditional, contemporary and self-penned songs in both the English and Irish languages. Accompanied by his unique driving guitar style, Alan’s powerful presence and technique have featured on two highly acclaimed solo albums, On The Other Hand (1998) and Tip Of The Tongue (2000) alongside numerous recordings and collaborations with a number of bands and projects that have formed the core of a great life in music. A commanding stage presence, with a voice that is powerful, sensitive and crystal clear, Alan’s gigs are always truly memorable.

He began his musical career as a drummer, before making his name in traditional music circles in the 1980's and 90's as lead singer, guitarist, and bodhrán player with the tremendous band Afterhours, with whom he made three albums - Afterhours, Hung Up And Dry, and Up To Here– and toured extensively worldwide. Since then Alan has appeared as a member of a number of bands including At First Light, Airla, Tulsk and Rambling Boys of Pleasure.
Alan has been heavily involved in collaborative projects, and was the cornerstone of the four acclaimed annual Irish Sea Sessions concerts, tours and albums produced in Liverpool, Ireland and London. The Sea Sessions saw him combine with Declan O’Rourke, Damien Dempsey, Pauline Scanlon, Emily Portman and many more. In addition, Alan has worked both as a record producer and as an actor, including the play ‘This Is What We Sang’ that won Production of the Year at the First Irish Theatre Festival in New York 2010. He has also presented TV programmes in the Irish language for the BBC and TG4.

Burke's strengths are his voice, a sweet mellifluous instrument, judiciously used and an understanding of his material. Alan Burke's rites of passage from band leader to first rate solo artist are complete. 'On The Other Hand' proves that. - Rock 'n Reel

GIGSPANNER : 8pm

Peter Knight's Gigspanner were amazing... I can only think of a handful of folk musicians world-wide that have the kind of relationship with their instrument that Peter Knight has: Martin Hayes, Enda Scahill, Mike McGoldrick, John McCusker, Martin Simpson.

Many people as they trickled out into the night said that this was one of the best gigs they'd ever been to. I'd agree with that. If you get a quarter of a chance to see them, go - there were people there last night who had travelled many miles to be there. It was well worth every mile"

Mike Harding: Broadcaster/Musician/Writer

In the wake of his departure from Steeleye Span, legendary fiddle player Peter Knight has turned his full attention to his trio Gigspanner, and in the process established their reputation as one of the most genuinely ground-breaking forces on the British folk scene, inspiring Maverick magazine to write "Gigspanner are making some of the most beautiful music the genre has to offer" 5*****

Described by Folk Radio UK as one of the “most quietly brilliant sets of musicians in the folk world and beyond”, they take self-penned material along with music rooted in the British Isles and with the flick of a bow, a finely chosen chord or slip of a beat, produce richly atmospheric arrangements “with notes seemingly plucked from the stars and rhythms from the equator” (Spiral Earth).

Innovative, spellbinding, astonishing… the superlatives have come thick and fast. The trio's interpretations of traditional songs and tunes have captivated audiences and festivals and venues up and down the land. There can be no question that Peter Knight has made some of the greatest music of his life with his trio Gigspanner.

Their most recent release, ‘The Wife of Urban Law’ received several ‘Best Of’ end of year accolades, including making it on to Mojo’s ‘The 10 Best Folk Albums’ list.

Press Quotes…

"Gigspanner has taken traditional tunes as a starting point and rearranged,
orchestrated and improvised around them to create fascinating new works.
Their increasingly impressive sound is like no other" Folk Radio UK

"With his trio, Peter Knight breaks new ground and is second to absolutely nobody. Groundbreaking, engaging, frequently astonishing, Gigspanner deliver a simply superb set" 5***** Maverick Magazine

"Gigspanner are reshaping tradition in fascinating ways" fRoots Magazine

“A glorious musical tour de force...simply exquisite” 4**** Spiral Earth

“Gigspanner work together in musical genius" EFDSS Magazine
